Thanks for the info, and that did have some good tips! I think I might try hacking the label on the log device first. I'll post if I get something working. If that works, it might be best to make a bit for bit copy of the log device and gzip it. It should be small assuming you are using a ram based device (and have zeroed it before making the label). Now I just need some time to start digging into the on disk format...
