In terms of permissions, yes Samba links to AD fine. I haven't done much testing of file ownership, but you can set permissions from a windows workstation.
However, my testing earlier this year showed that Samba treats permissions very differently to a windows server. I had a lot of problems with inheritance although I understand there may be a bugfix out now to fix that. I haven't tested auditing, but a quick google appears to show that it's possible in samba: http://lists.samba.org/archive/samba/2003-February/061045.html http://sourceforge.net/projects/smbdaudit/ http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/7251 - Auditing with Samba in 2004! My feeling is that Samba itself is well tested and very robust, but Samba with ZFS is considerably newer. Whatever you are looking to do, I would advise testing it thoroughly.
