Hi, Christopher,

  I tried by using raw files as the spare, remove the file, then 'zpool 
remove' ,
looks the raw files could be eliminated from the pool.

  But since you use the physical device, I suppose it might be a bug there,
for the status of spare device has turned to be 'UNAVAIL'.

  Could you point out the OS you used? I might check with the latest 
onnv nightly to
see if this issue exist.
