i have a difficulty in understanding: you tell that the device get`s lost whenver the I/O error occurs.
you tell that you cannot use ext3 or xfs, but reiser. with reiser, the device doesn`t get lost on I/O error ? that`s very weird. what`s your distro/kernel version ?
