I asked this question a while back on the drivers list and got no response. The latest reference driver I have seen for linux is 3.6.1 and is tri-licensed( commercial, BSD and GPL). Also, FreeBSD has integrated a working driver for the 88SX[5][6]xx series. Please see http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/cvsweb.cgi/src/sys/dev/ata/ata-chipset.c While I certainly don't have the skills to write a driver for inclusion, it would seem some documention in the form of reference drivers is available.
