I'm looking into Haskell mode right now, so your best bet would be to see what you can do with Pango. If you (or someone) wishes to try something there, I'd suggest to try Colin's -- I believe -- idea. That is, use one layout object per line, so that most of them do not need update between refreshes, seems most promising.
