For what it's worth, I also did a test with the GHC 6.10.4 release candidate, where there aren't any compile difficulties. yi does still slow down over time, as far as I can judge. Also, pasting e. g. the yi README file from the x selection still takes several seconds, and - to step on my hobby horse - raises memory usage to 100M RES. Interestingly, memory usage doesn't steadily continue to go up - it firsts rests at e. g. about 400M, as if the garbage collector decided that to be a sensitive bound, until I edit a larger file, when it would go up to about 500M, now resting there. Have things in general become more strict or something?
