This is issue 212. It seems that I'm the only one to like this. (Still it's consistent, so Haskellers should like it :p) It's easily fixed though: in the binding for backspace and C-d, add a dummy insert of the empty string.
If you submit such a patch to the default emacs keymap, I'll apply it. (Don't forget to add commentary to the code, otherwise you risk somebody cleaning it up) Cheers, JP.
