Hi,
I think that you have to update to the next version, 20.10 - then 21.04 and so on.

Hello, and sorry for the long delay in responding.

Fortunately, the Ubuntu support lifecycle is a lot longer than that
for commercial software, and as long as I can still get security
updates, this issue is not urgent. But, I still cannot upgrade my
Ubuntu from version 20.04.6 LTS to version 22.04.3 LTS.  The updater
either freezes or dies at the stage of "calculating upgrade..."  So,
as suggested last year, I finally got around to trying the upgrade
from the command line.  Here are the results:

    Could not calculate the upgrade

An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade.

    This was likely caused by:
    * Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu
Please use the tool 'ppa-purge' from the ppa-purge
package to remove software from a Launchpad PPA and
    try the upgrade again.

If none of this applies, then please report this bug using the
    command 'ubuntu-bug ubuntu-release-upgrader-core' in a terminal. If
you want to investigate this yourself the log files in
'/var/log/dist-upgrade' will contain details about the upgrade.
Specifically, look at 'main.log' and 'apt.log'.

Note that I don't have a "ppa-purge" command, and "apt" is unable to
locate such a package (moreover, it doesn't seem to apply to me,
    anyway.)

(Previously, I already tried bypassing the hardware firewall, but
that didn't fix it, so I didn't try bypassing it again this time,
but at least I got rid of "double-NAT" by plugging the firewall
directly into the WAN--and the Internet works fine, just not the
    software upgrader.)

I have attached /var/log/dist-upgrade/main.log.  Relevant portions
    of /var/log/dist-upgrade/apt.log are posted at

I don't see an obvious problem from the logs other than essential apps are not being upgraded/installed.

At earlier steps in the upgrade process, if you are selecting to preserve current apps/settings, those choices could be preventing the installation/upgrade of new components. I don't enough of the Xubuntu components to understand what/how essential parts are connected to each other.

Another option to check on is an old bugaboo: are you running out of disk space, either on the volume to be upgrade or in the /boot volume (where you should only have 2-3 kernel images)?

The sudden halt without explanation is a common result of a lack of disk space.
