same with both pdf readers.  The application never opens.

On the other hand, when I click on the document viewer in the office
menu, I get a window titled 'recent documents' that is blank. I click on
the file foon, get a 'select a file', select my file, get a big icon,
then nothing.

Try running either viewer from a terminal window and see what errors
show up (and post them here).
