Now I reinstalled 16 and kept files on a partition that is for 17: what would be the best way to access the files, and then remove the partition?

PS
Clear Linux of Intel would be my next dist if this would fail for THIS pc. Else I am happy with Xubuntu!

mount the partition for 17, using a file manager or through fstab, then copy over what you want.

The sudo apt-get install gparted, delete the 17 partition and extend your 16 partition.

Your not the only one unhappy with the latest Xubuntu.
