I run 16.04 on a T403 thinkpad (all Intel), I sometimes lose the cursor when just switching workspaces etc., no suspend involved. Might this be the same bug? I also have a bug which occurs if I have the IBM Trackpoint enabled as well as the standard touchpad - the cursor gets stuck in one mode (and controls only one window) regardless of where it is on the screen. I currently have the trackpoint turned off to avoid the bug but it would be nice to get my middle button back.
