The Xubuntu team has been discussing this for a long time, and with this release
we'd like to finally provide the option of a minimally installable system. For
this, we need a minimal metapackage, which needs to be installable and usable by
either using tasksel or installing the package from the mini.iso.
We have put up a seed file for the 'xubuntu-core' metapackage, and you can find
it at http://sigma.unit193.net/xubuntu.trusty/core.
The diff against the regular desktop package is at
http://sigma.unit193.net/xubuntu.trusty/core.html.
To test the metapackage,
1. Download the mini.iso[1][2] and install it
2. In a terminal, run
echo "deb http://archive.unit193.net/debian/ trusty/" | sudo tee
/etc/apt/sources.list.d/vanir.list
3. Refresh sources: sudo apt-get update
4. Install the core package
sudo apt-get install --no-install-recommends xubuntu-core
Alternatively, after installing the minimal system, you can run the
following line:
wget http://sigma.unit193.net/xubuntu-core.sh && chmod +x xubuntu-core.sh
&& ./xubuntu-core.sh
Note: The panel will have a few blank icons for the applications normally
installed, but not in the core meta. The menu will have very few applications
listed because there are few installed. The menu will also have multiple
separators on top of each other because of the missing Ubuntu Software Center
launcher.
Note: The suggested way to install the core package in the future as well would
be to use --no-install-recommends. It is also possible to install with tasksel,
but that can give you slightly different results. (If you are using tasksel, you
will also get packages in parenthesis.)
Xubuntu team members, please comment on the proposed seed file:
Is there something you would drop, add or switch?
Is the overall composition of packages something what you'd expect from a
minimal Xubuntu installation?
And for those of you who have actually tested the metapackage, including those
who aren't team members:
While dropping packages, have we still managed to deliver the Xubuntu
feel/essence?
When testing the metapackage, did you experience anything that you thought
was unexpected or -desired? What?
