this is definitely the main concern for my plan -- I agree it's very heavy. however I haven't found anything else that's as user-friendly. two concerns here: 1 -- I need to make this absolutely foolproof or my family will just get annoyed with me for futzing with a coputer. myhtv has worked great here; edubuntu on the other hand just languishes. I want to be sure spouse & kids can use this in a very intuitive way. 2 -- I am also buying an ipod (hence option 5 below doesn't work so well for me!). It's important to me that the ipod also works unproblematically. anyway I haven't got the ipod yet so I will experiment with exaile as soon as it gets here. will also check out gmusicbrowser-- that's one I hadn't heard of > > 2.
