With lightdm removed from my system, when I run "mate-session" from the
a user's command line, I get
$ mate-session
** (mate-session:8363): WARNING **: 20:26:30.590: Cannot open display:
Running xinit from the user's command line give me:
$ xinit
(EE)
Fatal server error:
(EE) Server is already active for display 0
If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock
and start again.

Removing /tmp/.X0-lock does ot help
How do I troubleshoot this?
