Thanks to all!  This morning I was able to use my arrow keys!

Last night, prior to shutting down my system, I added this
line:

   Option          "XkbRules"      "evdev"

to my 'Section "InputClass"' in the xorg.cond.d directory.

That did the trick.  I don't know how to close this thread,
but since I was the one who started it, it should be closed.
