You don't say where you found the things that you want explained, and I'm no expert so I have no idea what documentation you looked at. As is often the case arch has a good page at https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/X_keyboard_extension and it has a number of possibly useful references at the end. You don't say either why you're trying to avoid using libraries, which might be helpful in guiding people's responses.
