Hi Felix, Thanks for pointing me to the debugging resources.
I tried the following based on your suggestions : - Used Xfce4 instead of Gnome. No luck. - Managed to get the modesetting driver to work with Xfce4 (didn't work with gnome). No luck and X still freezes. Apart from the resources you pointed me to debug X, I came across the following that deals specifically with X freezes : https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze I will try out everything else suggested in all of these resources. Fingers crossed. Wonder what Xephyr and Virtualbox (with the Vboxvideo X driver) are doing different from the Xorg drivers that X clients work there but not under Xorg? *pull my hair* Thanks so much for all your help.
