It's not strange. It should be expected now. In fact, it is GLX that require special visual for any sane combination of basic properties like Z-buffer, stencil, double buffer and some others. Nevertheless, this behaviour is perfectly adheres to spec, and is here for a long time and doesn't cause much trouble.
