After playing around with custom toolchain and renaming /usr/bin/cpp
to /usr/bin/cpp.bak I noticed that xdm looks different. I tried to
set a path to an old cpp in /etc/X11/xdm/xdm-config like this but it
doesn't work:
DisplayManager*cpp: /usr/bin/cpp.bakkk
By `doesn't work' I mean that xdm still looks different than it used
to be before renaming cpp. Is DisplayManager*cpp option still
supported?
No - I'm surprised to see it's listed in the man page, because there's
no code in the program for it, and I don't remember there ever being
code for it.
Looking in our current git history, it's not been supported since
X.Org took the code from X11R6.6 & XFree86 4.4 in 2005, and in the
ancient X Consortium history I finally found the code for it being
removed back in 1991:

I guess they missed the man page update then.
