Pastebin your /var/log/Xorg.0.log and someone might be able to suggest what to try WRT your specific hardware. It may be the driver for your gfxchip is where the fault lies, not Xorg itself. Another way to bisect is to try other distros, most easily with live media rather than installing to HD. Distrowatch charts release dates and many package versions, so you can choose what to try by trying something with a kernel in between 13.10's 3.11 and 14.04's 3.13. e.g., Mageia 4 was released with 3.12. If the other distro's X version itself is in the chart, then you could choose one in between 13.10's 1.14.3 and 14.04's 1.15.1. Mageia 4's is 1.14.5. Fedora 20's is 1.14.4. CentOS 6.6 has 1.15.0. PCLinuxOS has 1.14.6. How old are your motherboard and power supply? Sometimes the trouble is defective or deteriorated parts.
