Black screen on exit sounds like Xorg doesn't shut down cleanly. See if
there's anything interesting at the end of its stderr output.

Occasionally, the black is not all pure black. On last try, text was barely discernable in very dark gray on a black background that's supposed to be blue, via this in ~/.bashrc: tty=$(tty); [ "$tty" != "${tty#/dev/tty[0-9]}" ] && setterm --background blue --foreground white --bold on --blank 59 --store

Maybe it's setterm from util-linux-2.25 that's broken, but there's no string setterm in its changelog.
