if for debugging purposes you can hook into the dtrace events. http://www.x.org/releases/X11R7.6/doc/xorg-server/Xserver-DTrace.html if you're on linux you can use systemtap for this, but I don't think there's any good documentation on how to use the above probes with systemtap.
