IOW, what does one need to do to ensure ttys 1-6 are not usurped by any X session, and that :0 goes to tty7, :1 to tty 8, and :2 to tty9?
Simply make sure to specify the vt when starting the server:
vtXX use the specified VT number
The question you answered I worded poorly. $SUBJECT (as modified by single word addition) is the important question. I really don't care which of :0, :1 or :2 go on vt7, vt8 or vt9. I only care that the first session started, whether by KDM or not, go on vt7; that the second, whether that be :0 or :1 or :2, go on vt8, and that the third, whether :0 or :1 or :2, go on vt9. I don't want to have to think about whether I'm starting a first or later session to which vt it should be directed. That used to be automatic, and still should be able to be, beginning on vt7, if only one can know what can configure it to be as it was.
