Thanks very much! This is a twist I haven't thought of before (I was looking at the i915 kernel driver and xf86-video-intel). Anyway, since this started to happening about a month or so ago (and did not happen before that) I have downgraded my xf86-input-synaptics driver and will check my mileage.
