I guess he means if you have two webcams with a "mute" button, there's
no way to associate the button with a particular webcam. To X11 it's
just a global mute button.
using XI2, you get the deviceid with each event, so that's easy enough
to work around. whatever listens to it at the moment (e.g.
gnome-settings-daemon) may not do this, but X certainly makes it possible.
