thanks for your hint, it actually solved my problem. I didn't use kms, because I wanted to revert back to the proprietary ati-driver with which I had problems in the hope that the new version would still support my card. That's why I didn't care too much about the configuration of the radeon driver. But as of the latest version ati/amd cancelled the support for it.
