I asked Dropbox about this, and got some tips about how to live better with the issue.
However, the problem is that the XXE Navigation panel communicates that the files in the directory need to be opened. So the solution for XXE is to not request file access. Or, as I would suggest, to delay request for file access until a specific file within the active directory is selected. Or even to delay request even longer, until xxe is asked to do something with that file. Btw, the fancy stuff that Dropbox does is that it places placeholder files for the files that lives in the cloud.
