OK, I happened to need this function earlier today ... find all occurrences of
a string in all topics. I went for the "search files" option, which marked only
the first hit in each file; what I was rather hoping for was every hit in each
file.

ditaSearch_01.png is from XXE, ditaSearch_02.png is from notepad++

XXE has

* text search/replace,

* element search/replace,
https://www.xmlmind.com/xmleditor/_distrib/doc/help/com.xmlmind.xmledit.cmd.xsearch.SearchReplaceDialog.html,

* and file search,
https://www.xmlmind.com/xmleditor/_distrib/doc/help/searchFilesPane.html.

Which one are you using?
