between </p> and <pre> and joins the two lines creating the ugly

Yes. XXE DOES NOT preserve the "physical contents" of an XML file and this is clearly advertised.

Row "Preserves as much as possible the physical contents
of an XML file (whitespace, character entities, CDATA sections, etc)"
in the table found in http://www.xmlmind.com/xmleditor/features.html has a RED CROSS (i.e. a RED CROSS and not a green check mark) indicating that this desired feature being not implemented at all may be a show stopper.
