In fact, it's the other way around. XXE DOES NOT preserve the "physical
contents" of an XML file, since it deletes my user-inserted line break
between </p> and <pre> and joins the two lines creating the ugly
formatting </p><pre>.

this is clearly advertised.
Row "Preserves as much as possible the physical contents

a RED CROSS (i.e. a RED CROSS and not a green check mark) indicating
that this desired feature being not implemented at all may be a show
stopper.
