I am considering XML Editor Professional to migrate a book written in
Word to DocBook, and from there into HTML, then to use ebookc before
further revising it.

No need to use DocBook as an intermediate format.

In XMLmind XML Editor, please select menu item "Options|Install Add-ons" and then install the add-on called "Word To XML".

Using the "File|Import DOCX" menu item added to XMLmind XML Editor by this add-on, you can convert a DOCX file to multi-page "semantic" XHTML5, which is perfect for ebookc.

More information in "The “Word To XML” add-on for XMLmind XML Editor", http://www.xmlmind.com/w2x/_distrib/doc/manual/index.html#xxe_addon_alternative

On page
http://www.xmlmind.com/ebookc/download.shtml, it is noted that ebookc
"Requires Oracle or Apple Java 1.6+."

"Requires Oracle or Apple Java 1.6+." should read "Works on any platform where Oracle Java 1.6+ or Apple Java 1.6+ is available". That is, pretty much any platform.

More information in "Chapter 5. Installation", http://www.xmlmind.com/ebookc/_distrib/doc/manual/html/install.html

Does this imply that ebookc works
only on Apple computers,

No.

or just that any current Java version (e.g., 10
or 11) is needed, even if running on a PC?

Yes.

I would appreciate knowing
this on a pre-installation basis, rather in possibly installing and then
uninstalling.

All XMLmind programs are extensively tested against every new major version of Java, including Java 11.

However, we recommend to use the most recent version of Oracle Java.

Surprisingly, Oracle Java has *TWO* most recent versions:

- Java 11.0.2. https://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html#JDK11

- Java 8 Update 202, slightly more stable, slightly faster than Java 11. https://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html#JDK8
