You don't need to type anything in the source view, *ever*. Please
always use the "Attributes" tool to edit element attributes.

b) If I open a topic with existing conkeyrefs, I always get transclusion
errors. Is there a reason for this? Is there a way to avoid it?
You must first open a DITA map containing directly or indirectly your
key definitions and then use "Tools|Use as Master Document".
After doing this, the "Attributes" tool will know about keyrefs (e.g.
autocompletion) and you'll have no transclusion errors in the topics
anymore.

2. I’m in Japan and I’d like to have the Japanese messages displayed
(mentioned in
http://www.xmlmind.com/pipermail/xmleditor-support/2016-September/011543.html).
Which add-on are they contained in? Is it “translate_xxe-7_5_0.zip”?
I’ve installed this, but haven’t noticed any difference. (I have to
install manually because my company blocks the add-on server.)
The add-on is called "Japanese (日本語) translation".
If you cannot directly download it and install it using "Options|Install
Add-ons"
then please download it from here:
http://www.xmlmind.com/xmleditor/_usercontrib/ja_translation-170906013824737/ja_translation.zip
and then please refer to this FAQ:

I cannot download and install any add-on using "Options|Install
Add-ons". Is there another way to download and install add-ons?

3. XML Source View is hard to read because characters overlap.
Is this because I’m using a Japanese OS?
Almost certainly yes.
Are there any settings I can
change? I’ve tried making changes in Preferences but haven’t found
anything that works yet.
This is a known bug which is impossible to reproduce using a Western
Windows/Java working environment, hence impossible to fix for us.
The workaround seems to be
(https://www.mail-archive.com/xmleditor-support@xmlmind.com/msg11214.html):
A) Start XXE and select "Options|Preferences".
B) In the "Preferences" dialog box, select the "View" section.
See
http://www.xmlmind.com/xmleditor/_distrib/doc/help/viewOptions.html#treeViewSettings
C) In the "Tree view settings" subsection, click "Font and Colors".
See
http://www.xmlmind.com/xmleditor/_distrib/doc/help/com.xmlmind.xmleditapp.kit.prefsheet.TreeViewSettingsEditor.html
D) In the "Font and Colors" dialog box, select item [14], uncheck
"Bold", click check icon ("Apply") then click "Close".

Anyway, please do not use the source view. Please take the time to learn
how to use the styled view. XMLmind XML Editor *is* the styled view.
If you are mainly interested in using the source view, please forget
about using XMLmind XML Editor, you'll be much better served by oXygen
XML Editor (https://www.oxygenxml.com/)
