I’m in the process of evaluating DITA-XML editors for our
technical documentation, including XMLmind. I’m having trouble with some
PDF output customization. It sounds like in order to have support for
that, I’d need to purchase a license for both XMLmind and the XSL-FO
Converter, is that correct?
No, XMLmind DITA Editor (and of course, its superset XMLmind XML Editor)
includes everything needed to customize the PDF, Web Help, XHTML, etc,
outputs.
Please refer to this FAQ:

How do I customize the HTML, PDF, RTF, etc, generated using the "Convert
Document" menu?

If so, how much customization support does that cover? I don’t think
we’d require anything extensive.
See "Support policy", http://www.xmlmind.com/xmleditor/support_policy.html
In a nutshell, if this can be done from within XMLmind XML Editor (that
is, without having to modify files by hand), we can explain how to do it.
I’ve been able to figure out most of
the PDF customization on my own, but a few things are causing me trouble
and I can’t tell from the XMLmind documentation if what I’m trying to do
is even possible. Namely, while I can change the font family and size
for the overall document, I can’t seem to change it to a specific font
(such as Trebuchet).
This is probably possible.
You have probably used the simplest form of customization which is the
"Document conversion parameters" (see above FAQ).
XMLmind XML Editor also has "Options|Customize Configuration|Customize
Document Conversion Stylesheets" (see above FAQ).
Please take a look at this chapter of our documentation:
The "Customize Document Conversion Stylesheets" dialog box,
http://www.xmlmind.com/xmleditor/_distrib/doc/help/com.xmlmind.xmleditapp.app.part.ConversionStylesheetsEditor.html
==================================================================
PDF viewers do not support the Trebuchet font.
Even if you manage to instruct XMLmind XML Editor to use the Trebuchet
font for parts of the PDF files you'll generate, the PDF viewer will not
show you this font.
You must also instruct the PDF generator to embed the Trebuchet font in
the PDF files you'll generated.
Fortunately this can be done from within XMLmind XML Editor.
See FAQ (which also applies to your Trebuchet font issue):
---
When I convert documents written in Russian (or Polish or Czech or any
non-western language) to PDF, almost all characters are replaced by the
"#" character. Is there a workaround for this problem?

I’d like to exclude certain heading levels from the
TOC as well.
This customization is not related to XMLmind. It is specified in the XML
source of your DITA map.
Please add attribute toc="no" to some of your <topicref>s. See
http://docs.oasis-open.org/dita/dita/v1.3/errata01/os/complete/part2-tech-content/langRef/attributes/commonMapAttributes.html
Also, do you offer any customization support for web help or XHTML? We
might be using these outputs along with PDF.
Once again, if this can be done from within XMLmind XML Editor (that is,
without having to modify files by hand), we can explain how to do it.
