This is definitely a show stopper :-) Thanks for clarifying.

No problem.

You are certainly not the only one to complain about this limitation. See "White space", https://norman.walsh.name/2006/02/23/whitespace (February 23, 2006!)

Just curious, how is XMLmind used in a collaborative environment? We
have several editors working on one XML based specification and
typically each person makes small edits to existing docs, you cannot
have an editor that reformats everything (unless everyone uses XMLmind
of course, but that is not realistic).

I cannot really answer this question.

Automatically reformatting XML documents each time they are saved to disk is an issue only when you use diff, that is, differences between lines of plain text, to compare document revisions and diff-based storage of document revisions.

Therefore my guess is that our biggest customers

- either exclusively use XMLmind XML Editor (which is realistic in the context of large corporations which often prefer to "standardize" the tools their employees use)

AND/OR

- they use XML databases/content management systems which are immune to changes in the *physical* representation of XML.

    Sorry but "auto-formatting" can be configured to a certain extent
    ("Options -> Preferences", "Save" section;

    <http://www.xmlmind.com/xmleditor/_distrib/doc/help/saveOptions.html>),

    Preserves as much as possible the physical contents of an XML file

    This limitation is clearly marked as being a possible SHOW STOPPER.
