Migrating another elderly document to DITA yesterday prompts a new question ... 
I've found and used the conversion parameter "show xref page", but I can 
already imagine places where it would not be quite enough. Consider a task 
topic that uses <xref> elements both for references to step numbers and for 
references to other topics: showing page numbers in Repeat steps 2 on page 1 to 
5 on page 1 is not reader-friendly, but page numbers in See also Section 4.8 on 
page 16 make the cross-reference a lot more usable.

Restructuring the information and using the Related links concept to replace 
in-line xrefs might not be a bad way to go - but finer control over the 
formatting of xref output would be a help. I realise I've been spoilt by years 
of working with FrameMaker :-}
