If this is the case, simply save your DITA bookmap to disk before trying
to convert it to PDF.

If this is the case, please refer to this FAQ:

When I convert documents written in Russian (or Polish or Czech or any
non-western language) to PDF, almost all characters are replaced by the
"#" character. Is there a workaround for this problem?

Simply make sure that the TrueType font families you'll select have
glyphs for all the Chinese characters.
My Adobe XI reader can take Chinese fonts, e.g. I can print Word docx in
Chinese to PDF.
Any thoughts or help?
Thanks!
