Just to add on top of this... I was a bit too optimistic. The PDF rendering fails for assemblies with an Apache-FOP fatal exception: "fo:block" not a valid child of "fo:root".
Sorry about this last one, please just forget it. It is important to always carefully check the realized document for printed output... (renderas set to "section" somewhere instead of "chapter").
