I have been considering the use of xmlmind and docbook for my publishing
flow to produce epub and pdf. I would like however to be able to exclude
lots of the docbook tags that are irrelevant for my needs so that it is
easer to work with and I don't see so many tag possibilities in the
menu. The Docbook manual explains how I could this and create a strict
docbook subset which I haven't tried yet. My questions are :
1) Do I have to also need to introduce these modifies schema to xmlmind.
I briefly had a look at the deployment guide and it sounds possible but
involved, so I was wondering if there is an easier way.
No, there is no easier way.
Most of the work consists in modifying the schema. If you send us your
custom -valid- schema, we'll send you for free a customization of the
DocBook v5+ configuration which uses your custom schema (but with no
other customizations like custom menus or toolbars).
It's basically a one liner. You just have to read loads of documentation
to be able to create it.
Do not hesitate to experiment with free Personal Edition and to send us
your custom schema before purchasing Professional Edition.
2) Does this mean that I have to buy the more expensive xml editor and
cannot just buy the docbook editor although I just want a subset of
docbook?
No, the less-expensive DocBook Editor should allow to do that.
If it cannot, then this is a bug and in such case, we'll fix it and
upgrade you to XML Editor for free so you don't have to wait for the bug
to be fixed.
3) A second preference for me would be to use the xmlmind XHTML editor
instead of docbook, but I don't see epub conversions from that option.
Is this possible to add easily?
No, not at all.
In our opinion, it does not make sense to convert a single XHTML page to
a EPUB, .mobi, Web Help, HTML Help, etc.
For us, the right way to do that is to first use XHTML Editor to author
a "map" or "assembly" (see this "map" as being a "logical Table Of
Contents") pointing to the multiple XHTML pages comprising the document.
It is this "map" which is to be converted to EPUB or PDF.
We plan to implement this feature in 2017.
