CALS tables are a lot of fun, and I've not had any problems tweaking them in XXE. As part of what I hope will become a steady march towards the future, I regularly use Paste as table to rescue content from a certain popular word-processor before tidying up the content in XXE. The only issue I've ever noticed – I think I can remember well enough to make sense – is that the value of cols sometimes ends up not matching the actual content of the table; but I have not seen it bring XXE to a halt.
Ir's fair to say, though, I've not tried using XXE on .html tables. I'd generally transform .html source to CALS .xml in an external editor first, then see what XXE makes of the results.
