XXE fully supports the "ftp", "ftps" and "sftp" protocol through an add-on called "FTP virtual drive plug-in". When the "FTP virtual drive plug-in" is not installed, XXE can still open "ftp://user:password@host/..." URLs using Java's built-in FTP support, but cannot save these URLs back to disk. Hence the message you had. This add-on is no longer bundled with XXE since v5.8.1. So may be you simply forgot to install this add-on (i.e. using "Options|Install Add-ons").
