OK got it.

Indeed it is a clipboard issue.
What I was doing is copying large amount of image data in The Gimp (like
4MB images). That immediately stalled XXE.
And apparently the stall time is proportional to the amount of data copied.
If you copy a tiny text in another application (hence emptying the
clipboard I assume) XXE is back to normal.

That is on Mandriva Linux, my colleague Fabian was able to reproduce
this on Ubuntu as well.
