First of all, check if this directory (/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb/compiled/)
exists. It can be a symlink that points to nothing.
And it would be good to know what xkbcomp said at the server startup.
Unfortunately the output of xkbcomp itself doesn't appear in the XFree log file.
But if you start Xserever using startx you can read xkbcomp's error/warning
messages on the same console where you run startx.
Even if your system runs Xserver through xdm you can start another one entity
of server (just for test) using startx and specifying next number for a display:
