Video Driver: vesa
Operating System: RedHat Linux 7.3
Video Card: Orchid Farenheit 1280+ VLB
Graphics Chipset: S3, 805
Bus Type: VLB
Monitor: NEC Multisync II
Problem:
Configured for one screen, [EMAIL PROTECTED] for depths 16, 8, and 4. 16 and 8 are ok. 4 crashes with
Server Signal 11 in fbTile() painting the root window background. The vesa driver's call to shadowAlloc()
passes bpp to be used in calculating the shadow buffer size. The PixmapFormatRec in xf86Init.c
describing how to access the buffer says 4bpp format uses 8bpp of storage. Hence, fbTile walks off
the end of memory when it passes the halfway point.
Setting Option ShadowFB no
works, but if the comments on this option are to be believed, a significant performance penalty is paid.
Since the reason for trying 4bpp is to gain speed by sacrificing image quality...
The fix seems to involve more than just doubling the allocation or halving the format. Doubling the
allocation stops the crash, but the image is also double width and wrapped on top of itself. Halving
the PixmapFormatRec did similar things, leading me to believe there are also problems in
shadowUpdatePlanar4().
I suppose if I want this system to perform, I should look at enabling 805 stuff in the S3 driver.
Enjoy
