Hi,
I have been battling with this for a while, and it is now time to look for
some help. XF86Config, dmesg, /proc/pci and "X -verbose" o/p appended to the
end of the mail.
I have an AGP G550 & 2x PCI G450, and am attempting to run them in a multihead
configuration, with one monitor per card (I am specifically not trying to use
the dualhead outputs of these cards (I have done so in the past and there are
issues)). This is on a D845PESV intel mainboard with a 2.4GHz P4 and 1G of
RAM, running linux 2.4.19 or 2.4.20. The distribution is gentoo.
The X server will start up correctly on whichever screen the machine boots
onto (by the BIOS AGP/PCI video setting), detects the other two cards (seen
from the -verbose output), does not detect the amount of memory on the
secondary cards (assumes 2M unless I set it in XF86Config), and no image
appears on their output. Otherwise there are no worrying error messages (at
least that are not DRM releated (for the PCI cards) or also seen with the
working card (cannot map BIOS)). I can even start (but obviously not see) X
applications on these screens.
I also see in the dmesg output messages from bootup stating that resource
regions of the relevant cards cannot be allocated.
Multihead works with WinXP on the same box.
After updating the MB bios to the latest version (which enabled the IO_APIC
support to work) also works with the Xaccel demo ($250 if I go that route!),
notwithstanding the dmesg entries alluded to above.
I have tried almost all permutations of (without success):
* Changing the bios entry to PCI for the boot up card. Same behaviour except
I have one working PCI card, and a blank AGP 550 and the other PCI 450.
* Different Screen entries for the devices: Screen 0 works as described above,
screen 1 gives a message stating (No Matching Device section for Bus ID....).
* Option "INT10" - locks the box up.
* Implicitly setting the chipset, and trying "mgag200 pci" for the PCI 450's
(it says PCI, I was getting desperate).
* Starting the kernel framebuffer (in the assumption that there is some
initialisation needing doing) : I get horizontal stripes on the two secondary
screens at boot, which get noisy when the X server starts. Otherwise the X
server starts behaves as above.
* Using the Matrox supplied drivers : We are getting somewhere, strong
vertical lines (1 text mode character wide) on the secondary screens, random
(CRT mode) character size blocks left as mouse trails, but one can visibly
open an application on the screen. Far from pretty, and not useable.
* Setting, and unsetting MTRR's, AGP, DRI, High Memory support, IO_APIC etc in
the kernel.
* Moving the PCI G450's between slots, and removing other cards.
* I gave up on kernel 2.5.62 after finding out that it does not work with my
software raided drives.
The good news is that I have proven the SGI xfs filesystem to be much more
resiliant to hard reboots than when I first tried it under Linux!
Anyone have any good ideas.......
