Unless you can get a card which supports the "overlay" option (of the mainstream vendors, that means any Matrox card) my best advice would be to look at VNC, which I have heard can present an 8bit visual to a client on a 24bit display. Otherwise, this feature isn't yet available in XFree86. So far 8+24 is only available on cards which support this in hardware. For hardware which supports 24bit DirectColor visuals (24bit TrueColor is not enough) we can in principle do 8+24 in software. As originally planned the RandR extension would do this, but implementation of this part hasn't happened yet, and it was decided to release RandR version 1 without it. I am slowly working on 8+24 software support, r128 is one of the drivers I'm testing with, but I don't have anything ready for testing yet, and I don't get a lot of time to work on it. -- Dr. Andrew C.
