One other thought occurs to me. Typically in a TeX document, whitespace is not semantic. In other words, spaces, tabs, and carriage returns are not differentiated. If we are so keen on supporting a few special whitespace characters, why not also support tabs and make carriage returns, you know, actually break lines?
