XeTeX in TeX Live 2010 should have been enabled with this "extension". The problem was that the microtype package did not support XeTeX then. On TLcontrib (http://tlcontrib.metatex.org/cgi-bin/package.cgi/action=listall) you can find the version which supports micro-typography in XeTeX. -- Greetings Pete Know thyself.
