Sorry, Phil, it's not really offensive to use these terms, seeing as the terms are still used often in literature. The standard books on Syriac, many of which are a little dated, still use these terms, so those who aren't specialists in the field tend to pick them up. The terms are political-theological slurs used against those who wrote with these scripts, labelling them as the followers of either Nestorius or Jacob Baradaeus, rather than communities with their own identity and long history. That's why we tend to use the names used by users of the scripts today.
