Hi Ulrik,
fontconfig is linked dynamically because there are system dependent
paths to the config files compiled in.  Static linking is preferred in
TeX Live, but fontconfig is an exception.  A statically linked
fontconfig might work on your system but you can't be sure that the
config files are found on others.
