And now I found that the PPC only and Universal Binary of xetex, compiled with LLVM GCC 4.2.1, both fail ("crash") with a segmentation fault at exactly the same spot when run as xelatex:

        XeLaTeX segmentation fault at <date>

The other binaries work...

A 0 byte LOG file is created, an existing PDF file is not overwritten and no XDV file is created. Xelatex writes the string "(/usr/local/ texlive/2009/texmf-dist/tex/latex/euenc/eu1lmr.fd)" into the console log and then waits for a minute or two, contemplating "should I go or should I fail?" Only with beamer this does *not* happen (because it never reads the eu1 files)...

You can never know too little of what is not worth knowing at all.
